California Employment Development Department
Employers and employees throughout the state benefit from the use of this application. With the negative economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, layoffs were looking like a requirement of survival for many businesses. By making access to this program easier and more efficient, more employers can participate and avoid laying off staff. This allows employers to eliminate the added costs of recruiting and re-training staff when their situation improves and helps employees stay employed reducing the number of people that go on to total unemployment. There are over 6,447 employers currently with active Work Sharing plans that cover over 191,324 employees that would have otherwise been laid off if they did not have access to this program. Since go-live, 1,944 employers have signed up for the program with over 46,214 new employees gaining benefits. Governor Newsom recently commented on the program during his address on August 12, 2020
